Kathak Dance at Shruti’s SOPA
Discover the art of Kathak — one of India’s eight classical dance forms — at Shruti’s School of Performing Arts in Bedford, Texas. Our Lucknow gharana program teaches tatkaar footwork, expressive abhinaya, and dramatic naatya under the guidance of Kathak Visharad Shruti Kafle.
What Is Kathak?
Kathak originated in North India as a storytelling art form performed by traveling bards (kathakars). Today it is recognized as one of the eight major classical dance forms of India, characterized by intricate footwork (tatkaar), expressive gestures (mudras and abhinaya), and dazzling spins (chakkars). Kathak performances weave together pure rhythmic dance (nritta), expressive movement (nritya), and dramatic storytelling (naatya).
At SOPA, we teach Kathak in the Lucknow gharana tradition — known for its emphasis on grace, expression, and refined abhinaya. Students learn not just steps but the cultural and philosophical context that gives Kathak its depth.
The Three Elements — Nritta, Nritya & Naatya
Classical Kathak training follows the framework of the Natya Shastra:
- Nritta — Pure dance and rhythmic footwork. Explore our blog: Speaking with the Feet — Tatkaar in Kathak
- Nritya — Expressive movement interpreting music and emotion. Read more on our Kathak blog
- Naatya — Dramatic storytelling and character portrayal. Deep dive: Naatya in Kathak
Our Bedford curriculum progresses students through all three elements, building from basic tatkaar and posture to advanced repertoire and performance preparation.
